| Abstract. | The article discusses the current problems of public spaces formation. The author presents the historical background, the analysis of public spaces functioning features. The specificity of their formation according to the certain period of time, and the impact of the state policy on their development is shown. The analysis of the literature on architecture and the theoretical background of «public spaces» are presented. The concepts which in Russian city planning literature are similar to the term «public spaces» are represented. The author's definition of the concept, its components and functions are highlighted. The modern trends in the development of democratic public spaces are analyzed on the example of urban development of Kazan. Positive examples, as well as disadvantages of public spaces’ development are identified. |
