Abstract. In modern construction, composite rods (in particular, fiberglass reinforcement) are increasingly used in load-bearing structures operated in aggressive environments such as the alkaline environment of concrete, chloride salts, and acids. However, the simultaneous impact of mechanical loads and aggressive environment leads to material degradation, reducing its strength and stiffness, which complicates prediction of the residual strength and durability of such structures and creates a risk of their premature failure. It is caused by the tightening of operating conditions for load-bearing structures and increased requirements for their reliability. The aim of the work is to develop a methodology for the degradation of composite materials and prediction of their durability. To achieve this aim, the following tasks were solved: developing methods for assessing the stress-strain state taking into account geometric non-linearity, developing a numerical method for calculating longitudinal bending, identifying the parameters of the laws of change in mechanical characteristics by comparing calculated and experimental data, and comparing experimental results with FEM data. A method has been created for predicting the residual strength of a composite operated in an aggressive environment under load. Full-scale tests of fiberglass samples brought to failure were carried out, and their residual strength was determined. A numerical procedure for finite element method (FEM) calculation has been developed to determine the stress-strain state of samples under longitudinal bending. A model describing the diffusion of an aggressive medium into a composite is proposed. A model of diffusion of an aggressive medium into a composite material is proposed. An additional strain caused by degradation is adopted as the failure parameter; a differential equation is written for it. Based on kinetic relationships, the elastic properties, concentration distribution, and ultimate strengths were determined at successive time instants. The model parameters were found from solving an identification problem, after which a comparison of calculated (FEM) and experimental data was performed. The proposed models provided fairly good agreement between calculated and experimental data. The practical significance of the results for the construction industry lies in the possibility of predicting the residual strength and durability of composite structures operated in aggressive environments, which improves the reliability and safety of buildings and structures.
