| Title of the article | Features of deformation of a layered soil mass. Literature review. |
| Abstract. | Problem statement. Classical methods of soil mechanics assume a smooth change in stresses with depth and continuity of displacements at the boundaries of engineering-geological layers. However, real sections are often characterized by a sharp contrast in mechanical and filtration properties of adjacent layers, which leads to localization of shear, stress jumps and redistribution of pore pressure. The aim of this work is to determine the prospects for the development of experimental and theoretical research into the settlement of layered soil foundations. The tasks include analyzing the work of domestic and foreign researchers to systematize and synthesize experimental and theoretical data on the deformation of layered soil masses, as well as identifying interrelationships between approaches developed at different times and for different purposes. Results. Three groups of works were analyzed: physical modeling on trays and stamps, laboratory tests of layered samples in triaxial and shear devices, and theoretical models – from analytical solutions with ideal contact to interface elements and hydromechanical models. We summarized the data on: vertical stress jumps at contacts; influence of bedding order and layer thickness on settlements; water filtration through the contact; anisotropy of strength properties; reduction of adhesion at the contact; and degradation of strength under long-term loading. Relationships between experimental observations and theoretical models are established: stress jumps are described by slip parameters, filtration effects are reproduced by models with hydraulic contact resistance, and the reduction of adhesion receives a microstructural justification in the «basis-cleavage» model. Conclusions. The contact zone is an independent mechanical and filtration-deformation system. Ideal contact models give a non-conservative forecast, overestimating stiffness and bearing capacity. The absence of standardized methods for direct determination of stiffness and hydraulic parameters of contacts limits the application of existing models in engineering practice. |
