| Title of the article | Comparative evaluation of the efficiency of mesoporous materials of different chemical nature for modification of polyvinyl chloride wood-polymer composites |
| Abstract. | Problem statement. Mesoporous materials (with a pore size of 2–50 nm), such as ordered silicas, aluminosilicates, and carbon nanostructures, as part of traditional building materials, provide improved physical, mechanical, and other performance properties. Such mesoporous materials of varying chemical nature and particle morphology can be effectively used in PVC-wood flour composites. These modifiers act as a binding agent in the PVC-wood flour system, enhancing the interaction between the main components of the composite. The properties of the composites are influenced not only by the chemical nature of the particles, but, to a greater extent, by the porosity of the structure – specifically, the true specific surface area of the particles and their degree of aggregation. The aim of this work is to study the morphology and characteristics of the porous structure and to evaluate the influence of these parameters on the structure and properties of modified wood-polymer composites. To achieve this aim, the following tasks must be addressed: examining the key parameters of the porous structure and surface morphology of mesoporous materials, investigating the effect of mesoporous materials of varying chemical nature on the processing and performance properties of polyvinyl chloride-based wood-polymer composites. Results. This paper presents results on the specific surface area and porous structure of two types of mesoporous materials, determined by analyzing nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms obtained at the boiling point of liquid nitrogen (77 K) using a “TOP 200” specific surface area and pore size analyzer. The specific surface area of the carbon material, calculated according to the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) theory, was found to be more than 25 times greater than that of the porous silica material. At the same time, the pore volume is ten times higher, characterized by smaller pore diameters. The comparison of processing conditions and the physicochemical and thermal stability characteristics of the compositions revealed that strength properties and melt processability are superior in the presence of the siliceous material, whereas thermal stability is higher in the presence of the mesoporous carbon material. Conclusions. The significance of the results for the construction industry lies in the potential to enhance the performance characteristics of wood-polymer materials and reduce the energy consumption associated with their extrusion-based production. |
