Title of the articleModeling innovative development of Russia: an application of principal component analysis
Abstract.Since economic development of Russia is dependent upon innovative development, it is essential to define drivers for innovation activity. The aim of this research is to identify factors which induce innovations. Principal component analysis has been applied for two groups of Russian industries. The first group includes connection and IT industries, which tend to present fifth technological paradigm; the second one involves extractive and processing industries, which are inclined to form fourth technological paradigm. To understand the difference of the factors that influence these two technological paradigms, it is essential to analyze two groups of industries separately. According to the results, innovation activity of both groups is mainly influenced by the same factors, including general state of the economy, corporate innovation activity and foreign economy. However connection and IT industries are also affected by direct government support. This can be easily explained: since projects of the fifth technological paradigm can hardly be accurately estimated in Russia, they tend to be extremely risky. Thus, almost all the factors that have impact on innovation activity of Russia are connected to the internal and external state policy decisions. When all the economic decisions taken by the Government are verified with the possible effects on innovation activity, Russia can reach significant innovation activity growth.
Keywords.innovation activity, innovative economy, technological paradigms, principal component analysis, factor analysis.
