| Title of the article | Evolution of atrium spaces: from the element of residential building to the key element in composition of contemporary hotels |
| Abstract. | Atrium is a aesthetically attractive space, that plays a uniting public role in buildings with different functions, including hotels. That uniting aspect is especially important in case of making people-oriented climate in separately taken contemporary buildings and in cities at all. As a result of using atria in composition of hotels we also achieve clear vertical zoning. One of the factors that prove the actuality of using atria is a long «life» of this architectural element. The history of atrium goes from prototypes in architecture of ancient residential buildings (courtyards in houses of Babilon, Egypt etc), to the ancient Greek architecture. Than in the period of Roman architecture we can see a «classical» atria, from which comes multi-level atrium spaces of Italian palazzo. These spaces are direct prototypes of modern atrium. As indirect prototypes we can name multi-level spaces of European theatres of XIX century, greenhouses and exhibition pavilions in Europe in XVIII century and so on. As the example of contemporary architect, who masterly uses the atrium space in the architecture of hotels we take John Portman (we take three of his hotels built in America as an example of different application of atrium spaces in the interior of the building). |
