Title of the articleThe strengthening of road stone materials with molten sulfur
Abstract.The research aim is to increase the physical and mechanical properties of crushed stone from sedimentary carbonate rocks, by impregnating it with molten sulfur to expand the application area. It was found that as a result of the impregnation of carbonate crushed stone with the molten sulfur there is formed gradient barrier layer with a more dense structure, which prevents water penetration into the pore space of the median «core», which leads to the occurring hydrophobicity and, in turn, provides a decrease in water absorption, and increases frost resistance. The impregnation of the molten sulfur into the pores of crushed stone and its crystallization contributes to changing the properties of the stone – improving hardness, increasing strength (crushability grade) and wear resistance (wearability grade). As a result of the work it was achieved a significant excess of the physical and mechanical properties of sulfur-impregnated carbonate crushed stone compared to not impregnated. The technical indicators of sulfur-impregnated carbonate crushed stone are at the level of the same of granite crushed stone. The improvement of construction and technical properties of crushed stone by impregnation with molten sulfur opens the possibility of replacing imported high strength crushed stone from volcanic rocks first of all during constructing roads bases.
