| Abstract. | The morphology of the city of Simbirsk and its suburbs of the XVIIth century has an ancient history. Questions of the settlement and defense of these territories were earlier fulfilled within the former states of Volga and Kama Bulgaria, the Bulgar ulus of the Golden Horde and the Kazan khanate. Environment in many respects defined system of localization of the ancient cities and settlements (primary construction in mountain places and in places of merge of watersheds). Subsequently the Moscow state used former regional system of placement of the bulgar-Tatar fortified cities and settlements, including Chuvash and Mordovian settlements of the Simbirsk district. Here in the middle of the XVIIth century there were Russian fortified cities of Simbirsk defensive line, suburban settlements and monastic settlements. For research of the medieval fortified city of Simbirsk and its suburbs, the author carried out the analysis of key historical and architectural, archaeological and archival sources. |
