| Title of the article | Essential-definitional analysis of the suburban territory within a metropolitan area |
| Abstract. | Problem Statement. The development of large metropolitan areas and megapolises primarily occurs in territories beyond the administrative boundaries of urban settlements – in suburban territory. To develop a systemic approach to strategic and territorial planning of emerging and developing settlements, encircling cores and anchor settlements, and spreading along the transport system, a town-planning approach is required to define the concept of “suburban territory”. The purpose of the research is to define the suburban territory of a metropolitan area by conducting an essential-definitional analysis, which includes studying theoretical and applied research containing reasoned conclusions and hypothetical inferences regarding the basis of the concept. The research tasks are: 1. To define the suburban territory within a metropolitan area based on theoretical and applied approaches to the essential description of the concept; 2. To identify the characteristic features of the suburban territory within a metropolitan area; 3. To apply the conclusions about the suburban territory to the organization of settlements within a metropolitan area. Results. An urban planning approach is proposed for defining the suburban territory within the metropolitan area, which results in conclusions about the primary use of the concept and the expansion of its meaning. The prerequisites for the formation of a suburban territory within a metropolitan area are described. Key theories and concepts that justify the theoretical and applied approach to defining a suburban territory have been identified. The results of the essential-definitional analysis have been applied to the Krasnoyarsk, Irkutsk, and Transbaikal metropolitan areas as a proposed solution to the problem of self-organization of suburban territory. Conclusions. The suburban territory within the metropolitan area acts as an independent urban planning object. The key outcome of the activities aimed at organizing a suburban territory is the emergence of sub-centers within the metropolitan area, which ensures the balance and prospective development of the urban settlement system. |
