Title of the article | The reconstruction of the medieval madrasa-mosque of Kul-Sharif at the Kazan Kremlin |
Abstract. | The study provides a scientific reconstruction of the only known architectural complex of medieval Kazan, fixed before its demolition in 1829 by professional architect A. Shmidt. Archaeological studies have confirmed the identity of archival drawings with the foundations of proposed Kul-Sharif Mosque-Madrasah that provided a unique opportunity to reconstruct its complex structure and external forms. The complex included several stone (and probably wooden) buildings up to three floors in height: mosque, Medrese, Saeid residence, business and recreational buildings. The analysis reveals some features of style similarities in Ottoman mosques buildings of 15-16 centuries, and two construction period, when the Madrasah were added to the Mosque. After the conquest of Kazan by Russians, the entire complex was handed over to the local bishop, reconstructed and used until 1829’s fire, after which the building has been measured and reviewed. |
